Kids love electric scooters. Who wouldn’t want to ride around on a motorized deck that uses handlebars to balance and steer, after all? Problem is, throttle-controlled 15mph scooters are far from the safest rides for kids. The Segway Ninebot eKickScooter C2 Lite offers a safer, more accessible starting point.
Designed for kids between six to 10 years old, the micromobility vehicle looks to make it easier and safer for small kids to ride electric scooters. They do it by offering different riding modes that provide safer riding characteristics, such as slower acceleration, lower top speeds, and even a power assist feature that mimics that pedal-assist on electric bicycles. Basically, it’s the kind of electric scooter that can give parents confidence to let their young kids loose on one.
The Segway Ninebot eKickScooter C2 Lite is smaller than your standard electric scooter, making it easier to handle and maneuver for its target demographic of children 10 years and under. It has all the characteristic features of modern electric scooters, including a 130W brushless motor to propel the whole thing forward, a 56Wh battery to power that motor, and throttle control on the handlebars to manage the power delivery.
It comes with three riding modes: standard, sport, and power assist. Standard mode limits the top speed to 7.5 mph and slows down the acceleration, while sport mode unlocks the both the top speed (9.9 mph) and acceleration to standard settings. The power assist mode is the most unique of the three, as it deactivates the throttle, so you can’t just press it to accelerate the vehicle. Instead, it requires you to push off the ground with one foot like a traditional kick scooter, which then activates the motor to help propel you forward with an extra boost. Each push gets a motorized boost, so the more you kick off the ground, the faster it will go, with the vehicle topping out at the same 9.9 mph as the sport mode.
The Segway Ninebot eKickScooter C2 Lite has a maximum runtime of 70 minutes, which should equate to around 8.7 miles in standard mode at the 7.5 mph top speed and 5.6 miles in sport mode at the 9.9 mph top speed. It can climb slopes up to five percent, so kids can ride it up driveways and other gently-sloping surfaces, with a rear drum brake providing the necessary stopping power. The vehicle runs on maintenance-free solid rubber tires that measure seven inches each, with over 250 LED lights under the deck providing colorful ambient lighting to make riding more fun.
The outfit recommends it for kids between 3’8″ and 4’8″ inches, with a maximum supported weight of 110 pounds. Other features include UL2272 battery safety certification, an LED battery display on the deck toe easily monitor charge levels, and an IPX4 water resistance rating for shrugging off splashes from puddles. Sadly, the scooter doesn’t fold, so it’s going to be awkward to carry it when kids don’t feel like riding (they still could do, since it only weighs 17.2 pounds).
