The Best Ice Scrapers to Keep in Your Car This Winter

An ice scraper is one of those things you always keep in the car during winter. You never know when your car will end up covered in a blanket of cold powder, after all, and removing it is a necessary chore (along with removing snow on the driveway) before you can get back on the road. We’re not just talking about your windshield and windows, either – you want to get as much snow and ice out of every surface of your car if you don’t want any untoward incidents happening. After all, ice on your roof can still fall on the windshield and block your vision at an inopportune time. Heck, it can even fly off and hit another car on the road. Suffice to say, the ice scraper is your best tool for clearing any ice and snow stacked on top of your vehicle’s surfaces.

The best ice scrapers don’t just remove ice and snow effectively, they do it while being very gentle on your car’s surfaces. This ensures you can clear the muck off without leaving any nicks and scratches on your vehicle’s paint job, so you don’t have to worry about whether you’re scraping too hard at any point. They also let you do it in a time-efficient manner, so you can get out of the cold and get back on the road with no wasted moments.

These are the best ice scrapers to help you quickly and effectively clear out snow and ice from every surface of your car.

Better Stuff Ice Scraper

Instead of giving you a handle to grip, this ice scraper uses a more unique design that puts your hand on top of the accessory for better ergonomics. According to the outfit, this completely eliminates the hand and wrist strain commonly experienced with ice scrapers, while ensuring it never slips off your hand. It has two contact edges, by the way – a brass scraper in front and chipping teeth in the rear, so it scrapes snow and breaks up icy patches in one pass, making it very efficient. Only problem is, you’re limited by how far you can reach with your hand, so while it’s a quick and easy way to clear each side of the windshield after a snow storm, you will probably struggle trying to get at any of the stuff down the middle unless you have longer arms. That’s not even to mention trying to clear snow off the roof.

Scrubit Ice Scraper with Glove

This accessory consists of a single mitt that you slip in one hand and a small ice scraper you can hold while your hand is inside the glove. The idea is to let you clear snow and ice while keeping your hand warm and dry at the same time, while the non-scratch plastic material ensures it leaves no marks on any surface you decide to clear. It’s a simple, convenient setup. Of course, it suffers from the same problem as the one above, as you’re limited by how far your arm can reach, although it does let you extend the scraper head outwards an inch or so, which is pretty nice.

SubZero Ice Crusher Scraper (16621)

Another compact ice scraper, this 11-inch long tool is small enough to fit in the glove compartment, so you don’t have to rummage around the back every time you need clear some ice off the glass. We love the 4.5-inch wide blade edge on one end, which covers a decent area in one pass, while the other end features a chipper for tackling more stubborn ice. The grip area is covered in foam, so it’s comfortable to wrap your hands around, with thumb holes right under each head, so you can apply additional pressure, as needed. As with other small ice scrapers, the length is the big limitation, so you’ll probably want to keep a step stool or a small ladder in the boot along with it if you plan to use it for more extensive clearing work.

Mallory Mega Maxx Snow Brush with Ice Scraper

Measuring 34 inches long, this ice scraper lets you reach across the windshield and even up some towards the roof, making it much more useful than the smaller tools above without being that much more expensive. Of course, the size means it will take up a lot more room in the boot, but that’s the price to pay if you want a bigger contraption for taking snow and ice out.  It has different tools at each end. On one end, you get a scraper head with a flat edge on one side for regular scraping tasks and jagged teeth on the other for breaking up ice, while the other end features a wide brush for quickly removing any loose snow left over on your car’s surfaces. It has some nice details, too, such as the lightweight aluminum pole, curved section leading to the brush head, and a handy foam grip for when you need the extra leverage.

Snow Joe LED Snow Broom and Ice Scraper

We love the telescoping pole on this snow broom and ice scraper, which can extend from 33 to 52 inches, giving you over four feet of length to reach across the other side of the windshield and across the top of the car. The built-in scraper head is lodged on one end and works well enough for the task, with a flat edge on one side and chipping teeth on the other, allowing you to pry and break up ice as needed. We particularly love the snow broom integrated on the other hand, which is pretty large (18 x 7 inches), so you can sweep a big pile of snow off the car in a jiffy, while coming with a pair of LEDs, in case you want to sweep snow off the car at nighttime (make sure to pray there’s no more snow storm till the morning). Yeah, the snow broom is what they’re really selling here, but the integrated scraper is definitely a nice addition.

SubZero Quick Lock Pivoting Head Snowbroom with Ice Scraper (80037)

Combining an ice scraper with a snow brush, this tool has an extendable pole that can go from 36 inches to 60 inches, allowing you to reach far while clearing out the snow off your car. The scraper head is very similar to others in the list, with a 4.5-inch wide flat edge for prying snow out and raised teeth on one side for chipping ice.  For some reason, we found the teeth here to be a little better at chipping hard ice than some scrapers in the list. We’re not entirely sure why, but it could be the teeth’s longer claw-like shapes. Like the one above, this has an integrated snow broom. Doing it one better, though, the broom has two edges – one is a rubber squeegee for sweeping big piles of snow and moisture; and the other is traditional brush bristles for sections of the car where you need to get into some nooks and crannies. It’s a well-built tool, as well, with none of the loose connections, bad locking mechanisms, and shoddy moving parts found in many tools at this price range.

AstroAI Extendable Snow Brush and Ice scraper

This snow brush and ice scraper is the longest tool in this list with a pole that extends to a whopping 62.4 inches, so this is the one you want if you’re looking for maximum reach. The design is pretty similar to most other snow brush and ice scraper combos, putting a brush on one end and a scraper on the other, with the latter sporting both a flat edge and chipper teeth on one side for breaking up ice. The scraper does as good a job as other tools in the list, while the snow brush works well for cleaning up loose piles, although the lack of a squeegee edge makes it tougher to deal with wet and heavy piles of snow. The broom, by the way, can rotate 360 degrees using the locking mechanism, so you can adjust it to find the best sweeping angle. Other nice details include the sliding buttons (which we find easier to use) and a pair of insulating foam grips.

SnoBrum Snow Remover

First thing’s first – this thing won’t be break up hard ice, so you’ll want to reach for something else if that’s what you’re dealing with. Instead, it’s mostly a snow brush that uses a squeegee to quickly move piles of loose snow off the car. The squeegee head looks very similar to the one on the Snow Joe above (we think this one’s the original) and works just as capably. What we really like here is that the tool actually breaks up into four parts, allowing you to store it in a more compact pile, although it does require you to assemble each time you want to use it (don’t worry, assembly’s pretty fast and straightforward). It assembles really long, too, with the entire tool measuring a whopping 63 inches once put together.

Snow MOOver Extendable Snow Brush

Another snow brush and ice scraper combo, this one comes in two extended lengths: 39 and 58 inches, so choose whichever one you’re more comfortable storing in the boot. The scraper head has a nice claw-like chipper shape that we found to be even better at cracking ice stuck on car surfaces, while the flat edge cleans up the loose snow and ice pretty effectively after. The snow brush takes on the same dual-edged as previous items in the list, offering traditional brush bristles on one edge for loose snow and a tougher squeegee edge for heavier, wetter piles. Truth be told, we found the 39 inches the ideal length for us – long enough to reach most parts of the car from one spot without being too long it ends up a problem to store in the trunk. The 39-incher, by the way, collapses to 31 inches long when not extended, while the 58-inch variant retracts to just 40 inches long for storage. Other nice details include dual foam grips and a 270-degree pivoting brush head.

SnoShark Standard

If you’re not a fan of the usual ice scraper design, this is as different you can find in the category. Heck, it’s so different, we haven’t even found anything like it. It has large head that can be used as a squeegee-style snow broom, so you can quickly push out piles of snow on top of the car. Except, it also integrates chipper teeth, so you can break up ice as you drag snow out of the way, as well as a scraper edge for prying off ice that’s stuck on the surface.  The head pivots as you move the tool, almost like it’s scooping snow out of the way, while the handle has two locking positions (30 and 39 inches) and a collapsed size of just 20 inches, so it’s very convenient to stpre. They also offer a longer model called XL if you prefer a longer 54-inch handle.
