Gozney Tread Makes the Backyard Pizza Oven Way More Portable

Many modern backyard pizza ovens are compact enough to collapse and throw in the boot of your car for taking to campsites, tailgates, and other outdoor gatherings. However, they do take up a lot of space, while being pretty cumbersome to set up on the go. The Gozney Tread is looking to change that.

At a glance, it looks like any other tabletop pizza oven, with an enclosed shape designed to hold in heat and a wide opening out front sized to fit a 12-inch pizza. Gozney, however, is claiming that it’s the most portable pizza oven of its kind, boasting a lighter build, streamlined dimensions, and features that make it easy to carry on the go, allowing you to indulge your pizza addiction when you’re out on the road.

The Gozney Tread is a compact pizza oven that measures 16.5 x 12.6 x 19.1 inches (width x height x depth) and weighs 29.7 pounds. While that’s not exactly sleek and light, it is notably smaller and lighter than your standard 12-inch backyard pizza ovens, making it easier to squeeze in the boot of your car with other gear. They also put carry handles on top, giving you an easy way to carry it when going on foot. Perhaps more importantly, it’s built for the outdoors, with a rugged aluminum and steel construction that should hold up to all the abuse it’s likely to get, whether you’re slumming it in the backcountry, partying it up at the tailgate, or having a chill day out at the beach.

It uses a lateral gas burner that, the outfit claims, recreates the heating action of a traditional wood-fired flame. How does it do that? We’re not sure, but if it’s real, then pairing that with the precise control you can get from a gas burner can make this quite the versatile cooking appliance for both the backyard and the outdoors.

The Gozney Tread boasts a preheating time of just 15 to 20 minutes to reach its 950 degrees Fahrenheit target, which, we guess, is a testament to both the effectiveness of their lateral gas burner design and the oven’s impressive heat retention. Once hot enough, the oven should crank out fresh pizzas in around two minutes each, allowing you to roll out half a dozen 12-inch pies in around 12 minutes. It supposedly cools down in just 20 minutes, too, so you can pack up not long after cooking your last pizza from the oven and eating it all up.

While you can bring just the oven itself to your next camping trip, the outfit also offers a number of accessories that should make it just that much more convenient to use outdoors. There’s a padded bag for more easily carrying the oven, a stand for setting it up at a comfortable cooking height without a single table in sight, a mantel that extends the lower front section of the oven, and a roof rack, which is, basically, a worktop that you can put on top of the oven, giving you a convenient place for food prep and other tasks.

The Gozney Tread comes out March 11th, priced at $499.99.
